Hi all, this is an amazing forum! Im looking at buying a 92 ranger stx with the 4.0 ohv. The seller says the timing "needs to be reset" I asked him how he knows this and his response was: "Do you know how the timing is off? Yes, I was working with a dumb mechanic replacing the throttle body and air intake manifold with higher performance parts to clasp so more functioning out of information technology and he hooked upwardly the sensor to a intake that wasn't even in the system and cranked it which caused it to jump a couple of teeth." Does this make any sense to anyone? Doesn't seem possible to me. Does anyone have any ideas what else could have gone wrong during his, uh, experiment? Thanks.

I oasis't even seen it yet. The guy just texted me this:
And then with the iii teeth advance what it does is it cranks and fires just on every other rotation it misses 2
cylinders which keeps information technology from actually turning over. It may very well turn over if y'all were to put 93 octane gasoline in information technology and also hook it up to jumper
cables only driving it in that running condition is not fun and is bad for the engine. The parts kit is a bit under 100.00.

Aye, seems odd to me. I dont think his diagnosis is correct. Im guessing its something else that he screwed up while playing with the throttle trunk and intake somehow.

Information technology sounds to me like he took a bunch of words that he know mean thing about cars and proceeded to use none of them correctly.

LOL, adsm08
Having a 1994 Ranger 4.0l OHV I tin safely say nothing you can exercise at the top of the engine will cause timing chain to skip Any teeth, i.e. throttle body and air intake manifold work
Seller could be a Moron, selling a Ranger would make that probable , or he could be hiding larger issues with double talk.
I would call back the after because selling a 1992 Ranger that needs a new engine that you lot can't afford would take away a little of the "y'all have to be a moron to sell a Ford Ranger"
Then unless you can drive this 1992 Ranger laissez passer on ownership it, if it simply costs $100 to gear up so he would gear up it to sell it for more.
Its a "Mechanics Special", broken and needs work, so one/2 toll if that, since price to repair is open concluded, an unknown

Yea, seller and "mechanic" sound like a couple boneheads. If it was cheap enough, I'd think near buying it figuring that worst case I'll put some other motor in.

Or Transmission
Had a friend who bought a auto and the seller had disabled the engine on purpose and then information technology "looked similar" a uncomplicated fix, he was hiding the fact of a bad automatic trans, and of grade it was sold "AS IS" because information technology didn't run
Caveat emptor-the principle that the heir-apparent alone is responsible for checking the quality and suitability of goods before a purchase is made.
